It plays a vital role in the transformation of food and water into energy and vital substances for the body.

  • Energy Production: The spleen transports the absorbed nutrients and water to the lungs and heart, where they are converted into Qi (energy), blood, and digestive juices.

  • Blood Regulation: The spleen also plays a crucial role in blood regulation. A weakened spleen can cause blood leakage (e.g., blood in the stool, nosebleeds, heavy menstrual bleeding).

  • Muscle and Limb Health: The spleen governs the limbs and muscles. Weak limbs or muscle fatigue often indicate spleen dysfunction.

  • Water Metabolism: The spleen controls the movement of fluids in the body. Edema, unexplained weight gain from drinking water, and abdominal bloating can all be linked to spleen problems.

  • Facial Appearance: A pale face, wrinkles, and sagging muscles are signs of a weak spleen. Maintaining a youthful appearance is closely related to keeping the spleen healthy.


Spleen Theory in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM):

  • The spleen and stomach work together, where the stomach pushes food down and the spleen transports nutrients upward.

  • The pancreas belongs to the spleen system, and a weak spleen can affect pancreatic function. Stimulating the spleen meridian can help improve pancreatic health.

  • Poor appetite, low energy, or white lips indicate weak spleen function. Conversely, a red tongue and a good appetite are signs of a healthy spleen.
