Lungs belong to the metal element in the five elements of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and play a key role in circulating Qi (energy) throughout the body. They are responsible for a variety of critical functions:

  • Breathing: The lungs absorb fresh air and release stale air, providing oxygen to the body.

  • Blood Circulation: While the heart powers blood flow, the lungs help promote the circulation of blood.

  • Nutrient Transportation: The lungs transport nutrients absorbed by the spleen to the skin, organs, and cells.

  • Water Distribution: They help distribute clean water to tissues and organs while removing waste water through the pores and bladder.

  • Protection: The lungs serve as the body’s outermost protective shield, defending against wind, cold, dampness, bacteria, and viruses. However, they are also vulnerable to these elements.

Lungs thrive in clean air, and their primary concern is dry air. This course will help you maintain and strengthen lung health based on these principles.

Lungs in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Theory

In TCM, the lungs are a system, not just an organ. Here’s how the lungs function and how they interact with other systems:

  • The lungs and large intestine are connected, and their health influences each other. Weak lung function can lead to constipation, while digestive issues can result in asthma and excess phlegm.

  • The skin and hair can reflect lung health. Pale skin, hair loss, and abnormal pores can indicate weak lung function.

  • The nose is considered the window to the lungs. Dryness or yellow discharge in the nose can indicate issues like lung dryness or lung heat, while clear nasal discharge can indicate coldness in the lungs.

  • Emotional health is linked to lung function: prolonged sadness can harm lung health, and waking up between 3-5 am is often a sign of lung weakness or meridian blockages.

How to Maintain Lung Health:

While we cannot physically reach the lungs, there are many TCM-based exercises that can help improve lung function:

  • Expand chest volume: Increasing lung capacity by expanding the chest cavity can greatly enhance lung function.

  • Clear lung meridians: The lung meridian starts at the Yunmen point under the clavicle and travels along the inner arm to the thumb. Regular exercise can help open these meridians and promote lung health.

  • Breathing exercises: Techniques such as breath-holding can enhance the lungs’ ability to absorb oxygen.

  • Laughter: Boosts the strength and elasticity of the muscles and ligaments surrounding the lungs.

  • Kidney-Lung Coordination: The kidneys are responsible for inhalation, and the lungs for exhalation. Enhancing kidney energy supports deeper, more effective breathing.

  • Diaphragm exercises: Strengthening the diaphragm can relieve pressure on the lungs.

  • Music for Lung Health: The Shang tone of the Chinese Guqin is believed to be beneficial for lung health, and will be featured as the background music for this course.

  • Pungent tastes: Foods with a pungent taste help open up the lungs and support detoxification.

The autumn season can be especially hard on the lungs, making protection and care essential during this time.
